The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the primary opposition party in the Maldives, announced on Monday that steps were being taken to impeach President Mohamed Muizzu, and the necessary signatures to initiate the process had been gathered.

The MDP stated it was collaborating with The Democrats to pursue the impeachment of Muizzu.

The move for impeachment came after Members of Parliament from the ruling coalition disrupted parliamentary sessions, protesting the rejection of certain ministerial appointments, as reported by Maldives-based news organization Adhadhu.

On Sunday, the Maldivian Parliament witnessed turmoil as lawmakers engaged in physical altercations, disrupting a special session convened to seek parliamentary approval for Muizzu's cabinet ministers.

Members of Parliament from the ruling alliance, comprising the People’s National Congress (PNC) and the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), clashed with the MDP.

The violence ensued when the MDP chose to withhold parliamentary approval for four members of Muizzu’s cabinet before the voting.

In response, pro-government MPs initiated a protest, leading to chaos.

Simultaneously, the ruling PPM-PNC coalition has filed no-confidence motions against the Parliament’s Speaker Mohamed Aslam and Deputy Speaker Ahmed Saleem, according to the Sun.mv news website.
